Nora Hammonds

Epithet: Worker at Vickers factory in Douglas

Record type: First World War Biographies

Biography: Nora Hammonds grew up in Douglas where her parents ran a hotel. The family would have been hit hard by the collapse in the tourist industry upon the outbreak of war, and when Vickers of Barrow-in-Furness opened a factory in Douglas, Nora applied for a job there. Vickers used the Palace Ballroom, where they constructed airships. Nora soon proved her worth and was promoted to supervisor. She also met her first husband at the factory, a Vickers employee who had come over from Barrow to help run the factory. (Image ref: PG/13728/2).
